Awesome or Awful: Dec. 30th to Jan. 6th

It’s a brand new year everyone! So to start it off right, I’m back with Awesome or Awful. I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything (and I’m sorry for that), but thanks to my New Year’s resolutions I will be posting way more often in 2013. I promise.

Enough about me, let’s get on with the top 5 things that happened this week:

Glasses in the shape of the year 2013

Let’s be honest, these only really worked in the 2000′s. (photo via blog.optx2020.com)

  1. It’s 2013, bitches! – AWESOME

I’ve never been a huge fan of celebrating the new year. The parties are usually never up to expectations and it’s hard to co-ordinate more than a few people all going to the same event on that night.

What I do like though is the idea of starting fresh, looking back on what you’ve accomplished in the last 12 months, and making new goals for yourself. 2012 might not have been great, either because there were a few predicted apocalypses or because we never caught Kony.

Despite that, I’m walking into this brand new set of 12 months with a lot of optimism. I’m ready to get to work on my goals and accomplish them. As well, Jurassic Park is being re-released in 3D this year. So even if 2013 gets off to a rocky start, there’s always that to look forward too.

Fun fact: 2013 is the first year since 1987 to have no repeating numbers. So that’s kind of cool.

  2. Fiscal cliff avoided, kind of – AWESOME and AWFUL

The most talked about topic at the end of 2012 had to be the ‘fiscal cliff’ in the United States. The impending tax hikes and reduced government spending of going over ‘the cliff’ could have caused another recession, according to experts.

The media coverage was almost constant in the lead up to the cliff. It was like going on a road trip somewhere and talking about the destination the entire way there. The news covered everything from what will happen if Congress doesn’t pass a bill before the 11:59 PM deadline on December 31st to the partisan disagreements plaguing the decision.

While they missed the deadline, Congress eventually came to an agreement, which stopped tax hikes for the majority of Americans. While it’s great that the fiscal cliff was avoided, the provisions that were covered in the latest bill, are mostly temporary solutions to a giant economic problem.

Hopefully the US federal government can come to an agreement that will help citizens and reduce the deficit in the long term.

Hey Justin, can I get a hit of that? (photo via TMZ.com)

  3. Justin Bieber allegedly smokes weed – AWESOME

TMZ released photos last week of Justin Bieber holding a blunt at a hotel party. The photos show the Biebz with a lit blunt in hand, but the story from TMZ doesn’t confirm or deny if Bieber was smoking it. But based on his tweets (here and here) after the story leaked, he might be guilty.

Even if he is, should anyone care? No, he’s an adult and allowed to make his own decisions. It’s actually kind of nice to see the clean-cut Canadian boy not being so clean-cut. He’s a young man, so maybe he did smoke up with his buddies much like many of his non-famous peers. Because he’s seen as a role model and is under the scrutiny of the media, it’s made to be a big deal. Tons of celebs and regular folk smoke, so let’s just move on.

This may not be the best press for Bieber, it’s great press for marijuana. The Biebz and Michael Phelps are fantastic poster boys for the illegal substance.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West standing together smiling

I think Kanye just said “Wouldn’t it be funny if we named the baby, Kimye?!”

  4. Kim Kardashian is pregnant! – AWFUL

So Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced that they are having a child together. Now many people would congratulate the two on bringing life into this world, but I see the real danger here.

A pregnant Kardashian is more than enough basis for a new reality show. I don’t think I could stand to watch a pregnant Kim go baby clothes shopping with Kanye. And I know I couldn’t listen to any member of the Kardashian family talk about their opinions of unmarried ‘Ye and Kim having a child together.

What makes this truly awful is what this could do to Kanye’s career. Lately, he’s penned lyrics like, ‘I was in too deep like Mekhi Phife/ In that pussy so deep I could have drowned twice.’ But now that he’s on his way to fatherdom, what will he rap about? The price of designer diapers? How his progeny will be stuntin’ in baby sized Air Yeezy’s?

    To quote West’s song I Don’t Like, “that’s that shit I don’t like”.

    Men protesting the NHL lockout

Now these guys can finally go home! (photo via thestar.com)

  5. NHL lock out is finally over – AWESOME and AWFUL

In September, the owners and players of the NHL could not come to a labour agreement. This lead to the players being locked out, until the two sides could negotiate a new contract. The majority of the dispute was over how the league’s revenues would be divided, player’s salaries, and contract terms.

After a 113 days of being locked out, the owners and players finally came to an agreement. The big question now is, how will they salvage the season? How will fans react?

Honestly, I hope that fans are upset with both sides. The reality is that these are two groups of very rich people, arguing and fighting over large amounts of money. Their fighting and inability to come to a resolution before the season started is insulting to the fans that want to see them play.

Now that the season will be cut short this year, hopefully the players will really step their game up and make it an exciting season.

New Christmas carols brought to you by Jimmy Fallon, Rashida Jones, and the most talented band on TV

It’s officially one month until Christmas, and already the holiday spirit is in high gear. Malls have completely decked the halls and radio stations are playing an infinite loop of holiday music. Even Late Night with Jimmy Fallon got in on the Christmas cheer on Thursday night.

Fallon, and his guest, Rashida Jones, sang a medley of holiday themed parodies. The duo, with the help of The Roots, took some of the year’s hit songs like What Makes You Beautiful and changed it to the seasonally correct, What Makes You Really Full.

In what can most accurately be described as ‘adorkable’, Jones and Fallon parodied everything from Psy’s Gangnam Style to Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye and Taylor Swift’s We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (and we-eee are never, ever, ever wearing ugly sweaters!).

The parodies are catchy and hilarious, so I know I’m going to be singing the Late Night versions of all these songs until January rolls around.

Dayna’s Mix for Your Mellow Mood

Sometimes after doing something spectacularly awesome, you feel a bit of a post-activity mellow. For me it happens during the times I wake up after a fun, incident-free party and don’t have a hangover, after you see a band put on a great show, or after an exciting vacation.

The mellow isn’t to mourn the ending of these amazing events, but to bask in how moving they were. You now get to sit back, tweet and update your Facebook status about how fantastic it was to crowd surf to your favourite jam by the best band you’ve ever heard.

So throw on these mellow songs when you’re just hanging out and let your stoke wash over you in an awesome wave with Dayna’s Mix for Your Mellow Mood. Until Grooveshark releases their embeddable widget, here is a link to listen to the playlist. As well, I’ve got a track listing below if you want to make your own copy in iTunes. Happy listening, dudes and dudettes!

Awesome or Awful: Nov. 12th to 18th

Welcome to episode two of Awesome or Awful! This week, there has been a huge range of things happening, we’ve got movie releases, sports news, and video games.

  1. Breaking Dawn Part 2 is out in theatres – AWFUL

Bella and Edward will grace the silver screen for the last time as Breaking Dawn Part 2 was released this weekend. For fans of the Twilight Saga, this must be a bittersweet moment. This will be the last time they will see their beloved undead couple battle it out and stare longingly at each other.

For the rest of the world, we all sigh,  “finally.” Twilight had its run, and I think for the general populace, we’re over it now. So we can all say a collective “peace out!” to the most bland film quadrilogy.

  2. The Toronto Blue Jays massive trade – AWESOME

In Toronto and the GTA (that’s the short form for Greater Toronto Area, for those abroad), there is a long running joke that not one of our teams are winners. Well, next season might be a turn around season for the Jays. After a massive trade with the Miami Marlins, many fans are thinking that this roster change-up can really turn the club around. And hopefully it does.

Not just for the Jays. But for the rest of Toronto. Now that the Argonauts are on their way to the Grey Cup, it’d be great to see two Toronto teams making waves in their respective leagues.

  3. Hostess going out of business – AWESOME

The internet cried out in terror that there will be no more Twinkies in production since Hostess announced that they have filed for bankruptcy after 80 years of operation. My thought is, if everyone who claimed upset was regularly buying Twinkies, then Hostess wouldn’t be in this position.

And now boxes of Twinkies are going for upwards of $600 on eBay. As a Canadian and a non-fan of the cake treat, I’m going to sit back, eat a Jos Louis, and giggle at the pre-packaged cake fiasco.

  4. Nintendo’s Wii U released yesterday – AWFUL but AWESOME

The home of Mario and Luigi released their latest gaming console yesterday, Wii U. And honestly, since it was announced at the E3 conference in 2011, I hadn’t heard much until this week. So what makes this awful is that Nintendo needs to step its marketing game up. It’s especially disappointing after hearing how cool the console sounds.

What’s awesome though, is that the latest Wii console has all new controllers, complete with 6-inch touchscreens built in. It’s also backwards compatible with original Wii games. The best part of it? You can Tweet and Facebook from it because of built-in app, Nintendo TVii.

  5. Bun B’s Jumbo Coloring and Rap Activity Tumblr - AWESOME

The funniest tumblog currently out there. If you haven’t seen this blog, it was created by Bun B and Shea Serrano and they post children’s colouring book type activities featuring rappers. You can check it out at rapcoloringbook.tumblr.com. And I’ll admit, it’s hard to not laugh hysterically when a kids’ colouring book asks you to draw in Drake’s eyebrows before he walks the red carpet.

Fair warning to any friends or family want me to babysit their small children, I will be printing out copies of these for your children and I to colour in and work on together.

Dayna’s Mix for Your Great Mood

It’s been decided that every week, I’m going to put out a playlist. They’ll cover a range a moods and the different things that put you in those moods. This week, we’re starting off in a happy place with Dayna’s Mix for Your Great Mood!

It’s Friday night. You’ve got plans to go to a party and you’re looking like a hot mess. It might be from a long, stressful day at work or you just had a really tough work out. No matter the reasoning, you need to clean up before you go out and make yourself a drunken disaster.

So before you shower, tame that hair, and decide on the perfect shirt and pants combo, throw on this playlist. It’ll make you dance, it’ll make you laugh, and most of all, it will get you feeling like a champion before a night out.

Until Grooveshark comes out with their embedable widget, here’s a link for my playlist. As well, this is the track listing, so if you happen to have all these songs in your iTunes, you can create it yourself. Happy listening and happy Friday, dudes and dudettes!

Awesome or Awful: Nov. 5th to 11th

Science has taught us that there are binaries in almost every aspect of life. From light to dark, death or life, and on or off. One binary I constantly find myself using to describe the world around me is ‘awesome or awful’. Just as there is ‘good or bad’, there is ‘awesome or awful’, the way in which I compare and see things in my personal life and the media. Much of what happens in the world can be put into one of these categories.

So, when I look back on the week, I think to myself, “Is this awesome or awful?” These are my top 5 moments for the last week, November 5th to 11th, and whether they are ‘awesome’ or ‘awful’.

President Obama with family after winning 2012 US Presidential election

1. The US Presidential election – AWESOME

Tuesday was a great day for many reasons. The first of which was Barack Obama’s re-election. The week leading up to Election Day was filled with predictions of a very close race, and the good possibility of Mitt Romney coming out on top. To say I was nervous, would be an understatement. So when CNN announced that they were calling the election in Obama’s favour, I think Democrats everywhere breathed a simultaneous sigh of relief.

The bigger win though is for the four states the voted in favour of same-sex marriage, for the record number of women elected to Congress and Senate seats, for Arizona electing their first black Congressman, and for the legalization of marijuana in two states. So, if you’re a Barack Obama loving, female, who believes in racial and sexual minority rights and smokes pot, this seems to be your week!

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez looking very happy together

These are faces of true love, let’s just hope they get back together soon to restore my faith in love (photo via cambio.com)

2. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez break up – AWFUL

My first reaction to the news was nothing more than a shrug. Why should I care that their relationship is over? There weren’t many juicy details either to pique my interest, except for the two are no longer together. But after thinking about it, I realized how awful this news is. If two of the world’s best looking people can’t stay together and happy, what luck is there for the average Joe or Jane?

Daniel Craig fighting it out with villain on top of a train in the movie, Skyfall

3. Skyfall – AWESOME

Daniel Craig’s latest jaunt as 007 in Skyfall blows Quantum of Solace’s confusing, yet action packed, butt out of the water. I’m glad Sam Mendes decided to table the trilogy idea and give Bond a new mission in this movie. The film has tons of great stuff happening. The action is awesome, as is Javier Bardem’s performance. And true to Bond form, Skyfall features tons of good-looking ladies and amazingly well tailored suits. And Adele’s theme song is just icing on the cake.

4. Jermaine Jackson’s name change – AWFUL

This, I just don’t understand. By changing the spelling of his name from Jackson to Jacksun, it changes nothing as they phonetically remain the same. The name change petition that Jacksun filed cites the switch is for “artistic reasons”. It just seems like a terribly executed publicity stunt from Jacksun to keep his name (however you spell it) in the news.

Michael Arndt with his Academy Award

5. Michael Arndt writing Star Wars Episode VII – AWESOME

Michael Arndt is best known for writing Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3, subsequently winning an Academy Award for his screenplay of the former. As a fan of both Disney and Star Wars, I’m excited to see how Arndt takes his hilarious brand of character-driven writing to Episode VII. As a writer, he’s managed to win an Oscar and pen one of the few cinematic scenes that brought me to tears (during the last 15 minutes of Toy Story 3, I was a blubbering mess). It’s great to hear news of Episode VII coming together, and it’s even better to hear that talented people are working on it.

A Star Wars fan’s take on Disney and Episode VII

As most of us have heard by now, Disney bought Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4 billion earlier last week. With that announcement also came the news of Star Wars Episode VII set for release in 2015, starting the trilogy of trilogies for the franchise.

George Lucas with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy in Star Wars costumes

Nerds across the internet furiously typed out their lack of excitement for this acquisition. Many of the responses included allusions to the film being terrible and the cast of Episode VII being filled with the likes of Mickey, Minnie, and possibly a few Muppets. There were even a few “I’ve got a bad feeling about this…” tweets.
To which I ask, “Why? Why assume it will be awful?” I’ll admit, I sarcastically made a joke about it too on my Twitter account. But, I am completely serious when I say, this trilogy from Disney has to be great.

Disney’s track record has been pretty amazing when it comes to purchasing companies. Pixar, which was bought by Disney in 2006, have released some of their best films since the purchase. Toy Story 3 is among the elite group of movies that have made me cry, and it came out well after Disney bought Pixar. Up, another post-buy film from Pixar is in that group too.

And more recently, Disney bought Marvel Comics and made the summer blockbuster Avengers. The Avengers was not only a financial success, but a hit with Marvel fanboys. The evidence seems to suggest that Star Wars, with Disney at the helm, would follow suit.

The other side of this coin is the financials. Disney is the biggest media conglomerate worldwide in terms of revenue. For something that started off as an animated film studio, they have moved well beyond that since their start in 1923. Not including the animated and live action movies that the studio creates, Disney has tons of bases covered. From merchandising, stores, theme parks, cruise lines, television programs, television channels, and so much more. Disney’s business model seems to be “make tons of money and be the best at it.”

The Star Wars franchise has managed to stay profitable for more than 30 years since the release of the first film. The reason for Lucasfilm and Star Wars’ financial viability is not because of ticket sales, but because of their great merchandising. As a childhood fan now well into my adultolescence, I have learned that the best part of the franchise is the merch! You can get anything from branded moleskin notebooks to Wampa throw rugs to lightsaber chopsticks (I have the Mace Windu set).

So when the media giant bought out Lucasfilm, they were quite aware of how the franchise works, financially. And Disney also knows that to make merchandising money, they have to make a great trilogy. Making good films does three things for the company: it gives fans confidence in Disney’s ability to take on Star Wars without George Lucas directing, it makes them box office money, and it entices viewers to buy their products after seeing the movie.

Their back end profits will increase tenfold if the films are well received. Otherwise, fans will just keep buying the original trilogy toys and nerdy household items like they have been since 1977. For me, it seems like Disney’s only option is to impress fans with a great new trilogy and make some serious bank on their $4 billion investment.

I’m inclined to believe that The Walt Disney Company wants to ensure their purchase and ruining a beloved series is not in the business plan. Yes, there may be some hilariously adorable crossover merch featuring Mickey Mouse in jedi robes, but the next three films will not be a disappointment to fans.
